Game description
MAG (which stands for Mike's Adventure Game) is an early Rogue clone dating back to 1988 (1985 if you count the original UNIX version). The player takes on the role of a brave adventurer who explores a deep, multi-level dungeon in the search of the fabled Sudbury Sapphire. Both movement and combat are turn-based.
Each of the dungeon's levels is procedurally generated, and the deeper down the player ventures, the stronger and more dangerous the monsters become. Defeating them yields experience points, allowing the player character to level up, and better gear can be found in the dungeon's recesses as well. Some items, like potions, scrolls and wands, have mysterious properties which may only be discovered by using them, with potential negative side effects, and some items are cursed.
MAG was released as freeware by its author Michael J. Teixeira along with the entire source code in C. Several Windows ports of the game exist, based on this code (please see the links section below).
