Game description
Bölz! is a ball-rolling/maze game that is supposed to be fast and fun, but turns out to be much less so.
The player controls what looks like a football (soccer for all you guys across the pond) ball that somehow found itself in a maze masquerading as a nondescript office building. Parts of the maze are blocked off by differently-coloured laser fences, and the only way to turn them off is to press a number of similarly-coloured touch plates. There's a lot of these, like the first level starts with 30 (yep, thirty) red touch plates, while on level two you'll be off to additionally find 129 green ones and 59 blue ones as well.
To make this a bit more of a challenge, the game throws in "monster factories" that will spawn spiky things which are able to hurt the ball really fast. You can roll over the factories (which look like grey pads) to destroy them, but they seem to start popping out enemies as soon as the player sees them, even if that area is currently inaccessible (it's a maze, remember?). For even bigger fun, there are pools of green slime that somehow makes the ball slippery, making it even more difficult to control -- your only salvation is to find the nearest puddle of water and roll through it to wash the slime off. Get caught slippery with a few spiky things in a narrow corridor, and it'll be game over fast.
The game also offers various bonuses. You can temporarily upgrade your ball to the hard bowling ball that seems impervious to the spiky things and can actually crush them, and to a rubber ball that seems more manoeuvrable. Other powerups include a speed-up that will make your ball even harder to steer in tight places, and several others of similarly dubious helpfulness. Occasionally you will also find band-aid like patches that recover a meagre 4% health each, way too little to repair the damage dealt by the spiky enemies.
Overall Bölz! honestly does not feel particularly fun to play. The unregistered shareware version appears to offer five levels.
