Game description

Harmony is a first-person shooter on the DOOM engine, originally released in 2009 for Windows. Set in a grim post-apocalyptic world, it follows the story of Harmony, a member of an all-female resistance movement that fights against an oppressive mutant cult.

The game was created as a love letter to the 90s FPS scene and borrows gameplay and design elements from DOOM, Duke Nukem 3D and many other staples of the genre. Similar to DOOM, character and monster sprites were created from digitized photographs of physical models that the author had sculpted from clay. The game uses a unique palette, giving it a distinct look among DOOM engine titles.

There are 13 single-player levels with diverse themes, ranging from wilderness to temples and underground caverns and factories. With this change of scenery, Harmony is quite similar to another DOOM engine game, HACX. The level design pays much attention to detail, creating locations that feel realistic, which is especially noticeable in urban-themed maps. Like in HACX, completely new enemies have been created through clever use of DeHackEd scripts, and weapons have been rebalanced as well.

The DOS version of Harmony became possible when author Thomas van der Velden released Harmony Compatible, an edition of the game that can run with many DOOM source ports, and not just ZDoom for which the game was originally created. The DOS version is based on the Marine's Best Friend (M.B.F.) source port. Note that this version has slightly different weapon behaviours and different sound effects compared to the original 2009 release.
