Game description

Devolution: Global Warming is a real-time strategy game in a post-apocalyptic setting that seems to be in part inspired by Burntime. In a world devastated by ecological crisis and complete collapse of known civilization, the player controls an adventurer set out to unite the wastelands under their control. However, other adventurers want the same and will try to stamp out any competition.

The player starts out alone, but can lead a group of up to four more people, who may be hired in settlements. You can only move by road from one location to another, with various sites such as camps, ruined cities, abandoned installations and factories scattered across the map.

There are two resources: food and scrap. The former is only supplied by camps under your control while scrap may be found everywhere, but you need to loot for it. Abandoned places are hot habitable and do not contain scrap, but you might find a special item that gives an advantage or a bonus, provided you get to explore first. All sites are neutral at the start of the game, and you will need to hire more team members and conquer camps and cities to ensure the survival of your growing faction.

The opponents, which may include both AI and human players, will try to do the same. Interestingly, there is no way to directly fight enemy squads, but you can capture their camps to deny them the valuable supplies to win. There are seven maps in this game, each with certain unique features. You can select a level of difficulty and the number of in-game days the game is played: if there is a limit and the time expires, the side with the highest score wins. Otherwise, infinite play is possible.

Devolution: Global Warming was originally developed for Commodore 64 and then ported to DOS. The game itself is free, but you can order a physical copy of either version from the publisher poly.play.
